As email users become more savvy to the kinds of scams that phishers use, many scammers are turning to SMS to send fake messages intending to collect sensitive information. Pickr Australia is reporting an uptick in the number of complaints from SMS users receiving scam texts purporting to be from legitimate organizations.
According to Pickr, scammers will send a bogus confirmation that money has been sent from a company like PayPal and provide a number to contact. Those that contact that number are confirming that their number is live and will then subsequently be bombarded with more bogus texts. Pickr recommends that unless you anticipate a text to arrive, do not respond to or tap any links in unknown text messages and if there is any confusion, to contact the bank first to verify recent transactions.
