A press release from the Public Interest Registry (PIR), the organization that currently maintains the .org domain, has announced that it has been acquired by the private equity firm Ethos Capital. As reported by The Verge, this will make the .org domain–previously a non-profit registry–part of a for-profit company.
This comes on the heels of the announcement by ICANN that it had removed the price caps for .org domains. When this announcement was made, PIR published an open letter indicating that they would not be increasing prices despite the cap removal.
