Internal email reveals Facebook intended to downplay data breach: report

The BBC is reporting that an internal Facebook email accidentally sent to Belgium-based Data News indicates that Facebook was planning to downplay the recent data breach that occurred in early April of 2021. As reported earlier on Domain Name News, a data breach at Facebook had not been reported to Canadian watchdogs. That same breach was referred to in the acquired email, which the social media site hoped they could explain as an “industry problem” and “normal occurrence.”

They also indicated that they believed that the media attention would eventually die down.

This memo was confirmed as genuine by Facebook and they responded with a statement of their own. “We understand people’s concerns, which is why we continue to strengthen our systems to make scraping from Facebook without our permission more difficult and go after the people behind it,” a Facebook spokesperson stated to the BBC.
