For more than a decade, CIRA has partnered with MediaSmarts, Canada’s center for digital media literacy, to ensure Canadians remain informed consumers of the internet. In May, they announced the results of polling that reveal that more than half of respondents have been taken in by a fake news item.
Further results indicate:
- 75% of respondents agreed that Canada’s public schools require additional focus on digital literacy for students
- 83% of respondents agreed greed that Canada’s public schools require additional focus on media literacy for students
In light of these findings, CIRA is committing ongoing funding to MediaSmarts for their research of Young Canadians in a Wired World, which investigates the behaviours and attitudes of Canadian youths in their use of the internet, with an emphasis on social media.
